From Our Farm - Fall 2016 Farm Update

Do you know what these rows in the fertile soil of the rolling hills of the Palouse mean?  That the 2017 crop of Joseph's Grainery Soft White Winter Wheat is in the ground and will begin growing very soon!

Can you locate the wheat seeds in the photo above?  We plant a proven variety of Soft White Winter Wheat that has a high test weight and high falling numbers, which makes it perfect for milling and malting.

Harvest 2016 on the Palouse

It's that time of year again!  It's harvest time on the rolling hills of the Palouse - the time when we're hard to get a hold of, but it's OK, because you know we're out working hard bringing you some of the finest whole grains and legumes.  It's long hours, hot days and dusty afternoons (see below), but we wouldn't change it for the world.  We love harvest.

We have so much to be grateful for - an amazing crew that's hard working and dedicated, equipment that runs and a crop to harvest, to name a few.

Above you see our two combines emptying into a bankout wagon, which is essentially a tractor pulling a specialized trailer that's equipped with an auger so it can safely haul the load of grain over the rolling hills to the grain bins. There, the grain will be loaded into a truck for transport (below) or straight into one of our farm's bins for storage.

We still have a couple more weeks of harvest to go.  We're doing our best to get orders shipped out in a timely manner, but if you get the voicemail when you call, you'll know we're harvesting.

From Our Farm...

It's time for another update from our farm!  The crops are looking great, as you can see below.  The heads are fully formed on the wheat and barley and will continue to ripen until we harvest towards the end of next month.

Here you can see the new crop of soft white wheat, as the heads are starting to change color from green to gold.

We're busy making the final preparations for the harvest...tuning up the combines, making sure the tires are ready on the trucks.  A few more weeks and we'll be in the fields, bringing in the 2016 harvest!

We've shared this recipe for a Breakfast In A Jar before, but thought it would be fun to show you exactly how it's done!

We hope you enjoy this breakfast treat as much as we do!

Farm Update

The crops have grown quite a bit since we last shared a Farm Update with you, so we thought you might like to see how the Joseph's Grainery Barley has grown since we last checked in...

It'll continue to grow for another couple of months before we harvest it in late July or early August.  Then you'll see barley from this field on the shelves, shipped to your door or even in some local beer come this Fall.

Speaking of local beer, it was great to meet many of you at the Palouse Pint Showcase!  For those who didn't get to attend, here are a few photos from the event:

The Barley Is Growing!

The Joseph's Grainery Barley has emerged from the ground and we thought you might like to see it!

This barley is some of the first we planted this Spring on April 1st and this is what it looks like today. It won't be harvested until late July/early August.  From there it'll be available on the store shelves and online by Fall.  If you're in the Spokane area and lucky enough to taste a brew from a brewmaster who uses Palouse Pint malt, you might get to taste this very barley sometime next late Fall/early Winter or beyond.

Spring is a special time around any farm.  The miracle of life and growth is evident wherever you look.  It's always simply amazing to look at the unhulled barley seeds you see below and watch the fields as they turn into the tiny little plants you see above.

From Our Farm: Spring 2016

Spring is here and the sun is starting to make a more regular appearance, so we thought it was high time to show you how the winter crops weathered...

The Soft White Winter Wheat is looking good.  It weathered the winter months well.

This wheat was planted this past Fall and will continue to grow.  It will be harvested in late July/early August and will be on the shelves for your to buy come next Fall.

We're gearing up for all of our Spring Work. You can see a video of what that entails below, this video is a couple of years old, but will show you what we'll be busy doing:

From Our Farm - Harvesting On The Palouse

Here on the Palouse, we've had very warm temperatures, early in the season, which ripened up the crops in record time.  Never before have we been this far through our harvest by this early in August.

In the photo above, our International Harvester Hillside Combine is cutting it's way through a field of barley.  Because of the gorgeous rolling hills of the Palouse that you see in the background, it's essential to have a combine with a self leveling mechanism to help maneuver the hillsides.  The header (the front part of the combine) can adjust to accommodate the slope of the hills.  This keeps our crew safer too.

This is what happens when you get all four grandkids together on the farm.  They kick Grandpa out of the tractor so they can pretend to drive.

So far we've had a pretty uneventful harvest.  There have been a few equipment breakdowns, which is pretty normal - running machinery that has many moving parts for long hours in hot temperatures, you expect to have some things go wrong.  We even had a small fire, but thanks to our quick acting neighbors and the local fire departments, no standing grain was burned!  Unfortunately we don't have any photos of the fire to share...everyone was busy fighting it.  We're hoping to be done with the 2015 harvest later this week.

2015 Palouse Wheat Harvest

It's time!  We've begun to harvest the 2015 crop of wheat here on the rolling hills of the Palouse.  Here are a couple "fresh from the farm" photos taken just a few moments ago.

It's a hot and very busy time of year for our crew.  They put in long hours to make sure the crops get in a timely manner, but it's also our favorite time of year...

We get to see the bounty of the harvest.  We get to reap what was sown months ago.

*Because harvest is an "all hands on deck" time for us on the farm, the best way to get a hold of us for the next couple of weeks if you have any questions will be via e-mail.

Harvest On The Palouse Is Drawing Near

As we're quickly approaching the time of year we call Harvest here on the Palouse, we thought we'd show you what the crops are looking like and where they are at in their final stages of growth.  Your Joseph's Grainery crop is ripening in the hot summer sun.  Bill took to the skies the other day and came back with these great shots of the fields.

Do you understand now why they are called the Rolling Hills of the Palouse? The trees in the center of the photo are following along the Palouse River Valley.

Looking from the sky, you can see the various crops in their different stages of ripening.  You're probably wondering, why the fields are laid out in such an unusual manner?  Well, they follow the topography of the hills.  Laying your fields out in such a manner is called Contour Cropping and helps reduce soil erosion on the steep hillsides.  This is an example of a agricultural practice we use to be good stewards of the land.

Here is the 2015 Crop of Joseph's Grainery Barley.  The barley is turning from green to gold and will be ripe and ready to harvest in a couple of weeks.

Order the best grain and legume products in the world right here.  You can rely on the Joseph's Grainery brand for the highest quality and purity.  From Our Farm To Your Table.

Thoroughly Cleaned Whole Grains

Thoroughly cleaned whole grains, what does that mean, you ask?  It's a question we are frequently asked.  So, how do we clean the grains?  No water is involved.  It's a process of sifting out the impurities.  Since a picture is worth a thousand words (and we figured a video is worth a whole lot more), take a look at this video to see how we clean the whole grains that you enjoy.

This cleaning process is done right on the farm, and then we store the wheat and barley in special grain bins, until it's time to mill or bag the grain for delivery to you.  From our farm to your table.

The Basics of Bread Making - A Workshop

We're pretty excited to announce the first class in our new series of From Our Farm To Your Table classes - The Basics of Bread Making.  We're teaming up with Spokane Community College's ACT 2 program and the Whitman County Library to offer a quarterly farm to table class in Colfax.

So many of you have expressed interest in touring the Grainery, visiting our fields during harvest or even just had lots of great questions regarding cooking and baking with whole grains and legumes, that we figured this could be a great way to make a few of those wishes come true.

As mentioned, our first class will be The Basics of Bread Making.  Here's the course description to give you an idea of what the class will be about:

Have you ever driven through the wheat fields of the Palouse and wondered, "Who eats all that wheat?"  Join the farmer and the food blogger behind Joseph's Grainery for a tour of their mill and a bread making class.  Whether you a novice baker or an expert bread maker, enjoy the experience of taking your loaves from farm to table.

The plan is to demonstrate and sample a couple of different bread recipes.  We'll take a tour of Joseph's Grainery and send you home with a sample of flour and recipes to make your own loaves.  So plan to join us this Fall on Monday, October 13th from 9 AM to 1 PM.  Click here to register and reserve your space, as spaces are limited.  We hope you'll join us!

If you can't make it to this workshop, don't worry, we have plans for future classes and different topics and tours.  Have an idea for a workshop you'd want us to host - shoot us an e-mail.
