Whole Grains In Bulk

Did you know that Joseph's Grainery can supply you with Whole Grains and Legumes in bulk quantities?  Yep, we can burry you in wheat, barley, lentils and garbanzo beans.  Literally.  How much do you need? Shoot us an e-mail.

These totes each hold a ton and are filled with Joseph's Grainery Unhulled Barley.  Over the next few months they'll be making their way to LINC Foods in Spokane, Washington.  Joel and the crew at LINC Foods will be creating a local craft malt using Joseph's Grainery's wheat and barley in LINC's new malting facility.

You too can have large quantities of hard red wheat, soft white wheat, unhulled barley, lentils and garbanzo beans delivered to your door.  Get in touch with us, we'd love to put together a specialized quote for you and your whole grain needs.

What's more direct than having the farmer load the grain onto his truck and deliver it to your door?  With the right quantities, we can do just that.  Need a large quantity?  We can deliver.

Reuse Your Food Grade Storage Pails - Homemade Laundry Detergent

Joseph's Grainery Food Grade Storage Pails
We know you must have a few of these beautiful Joseph's Grainery food grade storage pails sitting around empty, right?  Well, today we thought we'd share a couple of ways to reuse them.

First, there's the obvious way to reuse your food grade storage pails - put food in them!  The next time you place an order, ask for the grains or legumes in a bag, and you can pour the bagged legumes or grains right into your previously used pail.  We highly recommend that it be cleaned and thoroughly dried before pouring your new grains or legumes in.

Another great way to use those food grade storage pails is to put them to work around the house.  One of the ways we do that is by using an already-loved pail to store our homemade laundry detergent.  We thought we'd share the simple recipe that we've used for the past three years.

Homemade Laundry Detergent
by Joseph's Grainery
adapted from a recipe from our friend April Eaton

A great way to reuse your empty Joseph's Grainery Food Grade Storage Pails.
Ingredients
  • Joseph's Grainery Food Grade Storage Pail, emptied and cleaned out
  • 1 bar castile soap
  • 1 c washing soda (NOT baking soda)
  • 1/2 c Borax
  • Lots of hot water
  • Long spoon or stick for stirring
  • Container for dispensing the detergent
Instructions
  • Grate soup into pan and cover with water. Heat on low, stirring until dissolved.
  • Add to the pail with washing soda and Borax. Mix well and then fill the pail with warm water. Stir and let sit overnight.
  • Mix the next day, it will be thick and a gel type consistency.
  • Fill an old laundry soap jug or clean milk jug (we use a drink dispenser) one quarter of the way with the soap mixture.
  • Fill the jug the rest of the way with water. Shake or stir well before using.
  • Use 1 c of soap for top loaders and 1/2 c for front loaders. This does not suds, but does a great job, even in cold water.
This recipe is so simple and only takes a little bit of time, yet saves you lots of money.  One pail full of the detergent concentrate lasts our family of four about a year.  It's pennies per load and so easy that even my little brother and I get to help with mixing it up.

So, not your typical whole grain recipe this week, but a fun way to reuse your food grade storage pails!

Choosing Containers for Grain & Flour Storage

In order to preserve the nutrients and keep your whole grains and flours fresh, we suggest you take the following criteria into mind when choosing the containers you will store them in:

  • choose containers that are air tight,
  • choose containers that will fit into your pantry, cupboard or where ever you plan on keeping your whole grains and flours in your kitchen - this may seem simple and obvious, but we can't tell you how many times we've bough organizational products, only to get them home and not have them fit in the space we intended them for,
  • you may want to label the containers, especially if you have multiple types of flours as the different flours do have similar appearances.
Before heading to the store, you'll want to count and decide on how many containers you will need for storing all of your Joseph's Grainery Whole Grains and Flours.  It may seem like an unnecessary expense at the time, but these containers will save you money by keeping your grains and flours fresh and pest free.

How To Properly Store Your Whole Grains & Lentils

So you've purchased your Joseph's Grainery Whole Grains, what do you do with them now? Well, there are all sorts of great recipes on this blog for you to try with your whole grains and lentils from Joseph's Grainery, but you probably won't be using all of your grains at one time, so you'll need to know how to properly store them so they will last the longest and be ready when it's time for you to use them.

Prepare for it's arrival - You've ordered your whole grains, you know they are coming, so make sure you have clean, air tight containers ready for it's arrival. All of our grains are shipped in plastic or kraft bags, but we reccomend that you store the grain filled bags in another sealable container. This just ensures that pests can't get into them. Weevils and moths can bite a hole though paper or cloth, so make sure your storage containers are plastic or glass.

If you are storing larger quantities of grains, a new plastic garbage can makes an economical storage option. Just make sure to line the container with a plastic liner prior to filling it with the wheat, barley or lentils. Tie the top of the bag off and put the lid on the can.

Another great option are the storage bins by Rubbermaid and other manufacturers that you can find at any big box store for $4-6. This is how we prefer to store our grains at our home. We keep our totes/bins in our pantry and fill them with the 3 and 5 pound bags of Joseph's Grainery Whole Grains.

Prepare for it's arrival - You've ordered your whole grains, you know they are coming, so make sure you have clean, sealable containers ready for it's arrival.  All of our grains are shipped in resealable plastic bags or small kraft bags, but we reccomend that you store the grain filled bags in another sealable container.

Another great option are the storage bins by Rubbermaid and other manufacturers that you can find at any hardware or home supply store for $4-6.  This is how we prefer to store our grains at our home.  We keep our totes/bins in our pantry and fill them with the 3 and 5 pound bags of Joseph's Grainery Whole Grains.
