Breakfast Cereal Brûlée with Baked Apples

One of my Grandpa's favorite ways to eat Soft White Wheat is for breakfast as a hot cereal. One of my Grandma's favorite desserts is Creme Brûlée. When MaMa and I found a recipe for brûléed oatmeal, we knew we had to try it. We've blown any surprise by posting this, but we thought we'd make Breakfast Cereal Brûlée with Baked Apples for them the next time they're over!

This recipe is part breakfast, part dessert, and totally tastey! The apples add a tart sweetness and texture that blend nicely with the oatmeal and wheat.

Ingredients for the baked apples:
2 tart apples (Granny Smith) peeled, cored and cut into wedges
2 tsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
3 Tbsp brown sugar

Ingredients for the brûléed breakfast cereal:
4 cups milk
a pinch of salt
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
1/2 c Joseph's Grainery Soft White Wheat, cracked in your blender
4 tablespoons firmly packed light brown sugar

Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the apple slices, lemon juice, butter and brown sugar; stirring to coat the apples. Spread the apples on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in a 375 degree oven until the apples, approximately 20 minutes.

In a heavy saucepan over medium-high heat, bring the milk and a light pinch of salt to a boil. Add the oats and cracked wheat, stir and reduce heat to medium. Cook uncovered, retaining a gentle boil until the cereal is soft and creamy, and the milk is absorbed.

Preheat oven broiler. Divide oatmeal evenly between ovenproof baking, evenly sprinkling brown sugar over each of the bowls. Using a spoon, gently press the brown sugar into a uniform layer.

Place baking dishes on a baking sheet and place under the broiler. Watch the topping carefully, broiling just until the brown sugar melts and bubbles, approximately 3 minutes or less. When you first see the brown sugar begin to melt, rotate the baking sheet to ensure uniform browning. Do not allow the brown sugar to become too dark or burn. Remove from oven, place on a serving plate and top with the pre-baked, glazed apples and serve immediately.
